review 1: This book is beautifully written, despite it being a translation. It's 600+ pages but I whipped through it. It takes place in Madrid, Morocco and Lisbon leading up to and during WWII. It's about a seamstress in Madrid, whose path is pretty clearly cut out for her (pardon the pun), but she ends up becoming a very important person in the events that keep Spain neutral during the war. If you're a history buff, you'll love it, it is chock full of details about Spain and Morocco during that time period. I only wish the author could have invested as much in in making the main character lovable as she did in the historical details. I liked the character, but didn't love her. The books I give 5 stars to are books that kill me because I love the characters.
review 2: A... more lengthy and very worth it read. I don't like to give synopsis's - I'd rather say if you are looking for a drawn out story of a woman's life, love and struggles in pre-World War Spain, this is for you. It carries the heroine from her girlhood in Madrid, to Morrocco where she is left by her lover and must piece together her life with the only skill she has, dressmaking. She re-makes herself more than once, struggling through fear & doubt, to ultimately triumph in her own version of success. I enjoyed it ... their aren't any super plot twists that take you by surprise, but what you do get is great character development and an interesting adventure. less
