review 1: A hard-scrabble, post-collapse novel set in the not to distant future. It is told from a first-person perspective and the narrator is compelling. There's a low-key effect in the telling, but it has a lot of nice surprises and keeps you engaged. It's a harsh world. Life is harsh and so are the humans, but the Theroux does not use easy redeemers to somehow salvage the good name of "human". You care about individual characters, and even the rotten, morally challenged characters are rendered fairly.
review 2: Far North is a bleak and sad book. However, there is a slight streak of hope running through it. Makepeace, the main character, goes through unthinkable atrocities in the post apocalyptic setting. It is refreshing to read the exploits of such a strong, re
... moresilient female character. Makepeace is tough! There are echoes of The Road here, but I felt the story was a little more narrative focused then McCarthy's masterpiece. Oddly, there were numerous typos and a few glaring plot holes that dragged the book down. Yet, Far North is a nice, relatively quick read. less

Well-written and original dystopian, post-apocalyptic tale. Didn't like it, tho. Depressing.

Beautiful imagery and a few decent surprises along the way. Strong dystopian novel.
