review 1: I feel like Maron's books have become quite sloppy-- the main character here had almost nothing to do with the mystery, so the book was a messy split between what was going on in Deborah's life and two murders being worked on by her husband and her visiting cousin. As a result, there isn't much suspense or tension to the book and the storytelling is all over the place. Besides the poor narration and lack of focus, there are just annoying errors-- like having the characters discussing dates and mention that February 3 was a Wednesday and a paragraph later talking about how February 7th was a Monday, which is just not how the calendar works.
review 2: I always enjoy the latest Deborah Knott mystery, primarily because of the characters--very real people one can
... moreimagine knowing, maybe as co-workers, or neighbors. I especially enjoy the goings-on in her extended family of 11 brothers and former bootlegger father. This is a very satisfying mystery, with lots of twists and turns in the plot including an old secret brought to light. I especially enjoy a mystery when I think I have it figured out but it turns out I am dead wrong! Ha. I listened to the audio version, of course, narrated by the inimitable C.J.Critt. less
