review 1: This book is about a girl in Cuba in the early 1800s rebelling against her mother and societal standards. She finds the power of story telling and uses it to encourage others (slaves and orphans) to challenge the bonds that hold them in place. This would be a great story to use when talking about slavery (Americans weren't the only slave holders) as well as the variety of slavery (is arranged marriage a kind of slavery?). It's also beautifully written with lots of gorgeous images.
review 2: Lovely prose poems bring to life a heroic Cuban woman and literary talent, Gertrudis Gomez de Avellaneda. Chapters are told in alternating voices of different characters. Each chapter is a little prose poem, light and self contained like a watercolor sketch but together a... morell the voices of the characters paint a full and vivid picture. Endnotes give a short biography and bilingual excerpts of poetry. less
