review 1: This book is about a girl in Cuba in the early 1800s rebelling against her mother and societal standards. She finds the power of story telling and uses it to encourage others (slaves and orphans) to challenge the bonds that hold them in place. This would be a great story to use when talking about slavery (Americans weren't the only slave holders) as well as the variety of slavery (is arranged marriage a kind of slavery?). It's also beautifully written with lots of gorgeous images.
