review 1: I loved Maria Snyder's Study series and have been eyeing her other works but I didn't plan on reading any of them yet. I was in a mood for some fantasy the other day so I grabbed this one. I couldn't put it down! The story was captivating, the characters were all so loveable and the slow-burn romance was to die for! Avry's the last healer alive and she's being hunted because of a misunderstanding. The world wants her dead and after being on the run for three years she was finally caught. Kerrick and company end up rescuing her but only because they needed her to heal their prince. So began their journey to reach said prince. Most of the story focused on their trek across the land and I savoured every second of it!Just like Yelena from the Study series, Avry was smart and i... morendependent. My favourite type! Kerrick was frustrating but in a good way (if that makes sense). Belen and the others were loyal and essential. Their trip was surrounded by secrets and mysteries. They encountered horrible things, formed unlikely friendships and made sacrifices. Best of all, the romantic tension simmered deliciously. Seriously. So. Good.Maria V. Snyder really knows how to craft the perfect stories. Honestly, if you haven't read any of her books yet, you're missing out!!
review 2: I liked the idea of this book more than the actual book. The explanations of the 11 magic and the healer's touch fascinated me more than the storyline. The same with the peace and death lilies. I enjoyed the teasing of how they may be involved in the overall world but that connection never was developed well enough in the first book.I listened to this book on Audio. The narrator did a well enough job. The accents were all over the place and that was one of the only ways to tell some of the men characters apart while listening. I had to rely on some of the "said" cues to figure out sometimes and even Avry sounded like Kerrick at times. While I had that one complaint, I'm glad I listened to it. I wouldn't have liked the book as much as I did. Unfortunately, I didn't like it enough to continue on with the series. less
