review 1: In a similar cumulative pattern as "The House That Jack Built", this story takes readers through the swamp. As they notice the behavior of various animals in their natural habitats, they will also catch glimpses of the watchful alligator, who is waiting for his chance to seize one of those animals for his next meal. Richly-colored illustrations pay tribute to the wonders of the swamp and the alligator's ability to hide itself until just the right moment.
review 2: I read this book to my 4 and 6 year old and they both asked for it again the next morning. If that isn't 2 thumbs up, then I don't what is.... They enjoyed the rhyming text, and the repetitiveness of some of the text allowed my 4 year old to feel like he was reading along with me, as he picked up on
... more it right away. Both kids had fun searching the illustrations for where the Gator may be hiding, and the last sentence brought giggles from both of them. The additional educational information at the back of the book sharing details about not just the animals, but also their swampy home was an added bonus for the kids. Tips from the Author offered additional ways to expand children's learning, while Tips from the Illustrator went into detail about how the pictures were put together. The Tips from the Illustrator might really appeal to older children who are interested in combining their love of art and computers. Both of these sections really show how the Author and Illustrator have taken this book as an opportunity to teach children more than just entertain themI should note that I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads. I wish I could have given it an extra half a star for all the added material after the story. I would highly recommend this book for parents to add to their libraries at home, or perhaps to add to a classroom library in your local school. less
