review 1: This had the least "preaching" of any of the 6 novels in this series. Thank goodness! It felt to me as if she demonstrated through the characters the respect and compassion we should each give others, rather than haranguing about God doing everything or being responsible for life. And Gayla, though a professed believer in the Christian version of God, still doesn't suddenly become convinced that life is all "according to God's plan." It seemed as if the religious stuff was a bit milder in this one, for which I was grateful, because I honestly love Bostwick's writing style and her depiction of real-life issues through her characters, and the idea of forgiveness to alleviate your own negativity was well demonstrated. I'm still working on that in several ways in my life, but ... moreI'm getting there...hopefully! For me, forgiveness is still tied to judgement; you honestly are standing in judgement of others if you're unable to forgive, though in the case of infidelity, I still believe I'm entitled to that!! LOL See how circular human "reasoning" can be?
review 2: Fairly well-written women's fiction, focusing on two women supported by a group of others who revolve around a quilt shop in New Bern, Connecticut. Gayla escapes to her New Bern cottage when she discovers that her husband has had an affair and is unhappy in their marriage. Ivy has already made a new life for herself in New Bern, after running away from an abusive husband. Raising two children by herself and working in the quilt shop, she also helps other abused women obtain work experience but finds her own future limited by the lack of a college degree which will take too much time and money to complete and by her abusive husband. Gayla commits to exploring new things such as gardening and the other women join the challenge, each of them selecting something they've always wanted to do but never have. A handful of religious elements are not overbearing and fit with the story and characters. Overall, a gentle story of women's issues and the value of supportive friends. less

I liked this happy-ending book. Fairly predictable plot, but enjoyable, easy summer read.
