review 1: Wow. This may well end up as one of my top favorites for 2014! So very well written! More action than in Bostwick's other books of the Cobbled Court Quilt series, but the same deep and concise characterization that has held my interest and entertained me so well as I read the whole series, and now the prequel. Honestly, this woman is an excellent writer, in my opinion. I love the way she tackles such complex interpersonal issues, keeping everything real, yet hopeful. I believe you can see the progression of her writing expertise throughout the series, that in my opinion culminates with this prequel. Her books always leave me pondering the people in my life who have dealt with similar issues and respecting her characters for their fortitude while retaining their integrity... more! That is quite enjoyable and uplifting to me, since I see so little of that in my work world, but am fortunate to have so many friends and acquaintances who do... Lucky me! For this people in my personal life and for having discovered Bostwick's writing! With all that said, it seems to me she has become much less "preachy" with Christanity as her writing progressed; I seriously feel as if the first 3 books or so could/should be classified as Christian Fiction, though I realize that may well be my own prejudice... I can easily accept characters/others stating and/or explaining how their "faith" makes their life better, but I dislike it when I feel as if others are trying to convince or convert others to their ownpersonal belief system, and that's how I felt while reading the first few Cobbled Court Quilt books. Anxious to see what the other book club members thought later today!
review 2: This book was about Mary Dell Templeton of Too Much, Texas. She appears occasionally in the author's previous books. Mary Dell and her twin sister Lydia Dale encounter many obstacles, but those obstacles are conveniently solved one way or another. The women of the family are stronger than most of the men (that's supposedly the tradition from the time of the Tudmore woman who founded the town) and are able to accomplish much. The book also talks about the birth of Mary Dell's son, Howard, who has Down syndrome. It was an easy read. less
