review 2: As much as I love Marina Fiorato's books, this one wasn't amongst the best. It was a harder read, not as easily flowing, not as interesting. This book is a historical fiction, its main feature is the 17th century city of Siena, Italy and the story revolves
... more around its famous horserace, the Palio. The story is full of intrigue and cruelty, which is excpected of the times. Even though the story of the Palio and the city's history I have found intersting, the main characters just seemed mundane, forgettable, even too childish. Pia, the main female character is struggling to succumb to a life of what is expected of her, Riccardo, the main male character is just deplorable as a grown man, Violante di Medici is a grown woman who is living with the demons of her past. The only character that I came to like was of the child Zebra (nicknamed for wearing black and white striped clothes), who runs errands, delivers messages, finds out secrets for thr opposing camps by being somewhat invisible. Not one of her best works, The Glassblower of Murano is a much better read by far. I would have given 3.5 stars if Goodreads allowed half points, just for the city of Siena itself. less

This was a fun read with history, drama, and Sienna as the backdrop. Not your typical love story.

story line could have been great if it was written better otherwise a slog for the first pages
