review 1: Starting off with an unexplained stabbing? What better hook is there? This book had me from the start. The book brought up a lot of issues relating to mail order brides, premarital sex, shame, family and the class system. The one thing that really bothered me was the man who is labeled as a Mormon who definitely does not embody Mormon beliefs. Sadly though, I guess this "mormon man" contributed to the theme of a person putting on a show for the world while being a totally different person inside. All the characters have their secrets and I think that was what led to the family falling apart. In general I loved the connections, the way the family history unfolded piece by piece.
review 2: Considering that right now I am living in the Philippines for 6 months, "T... morehe mango bride" was a wonderful insight into the world of filipino families, and the struggles that women searching for a better life in a western country can face. I was especially touched by Beverly's story, since her end is on the tragic side, but still her will for a better life is so strong that she is capable of enduring so much... Also, the construction of the book is quite interesting, and my fascination with "The mango bride" grew stronger and stronger the more I read... less
