review 1: I bought this book based solely on the line preceding the first chapter. I never stopped being pleased with it. As a rule I don't read books about the undead because it lends me to buying firearms but this story was worth the paranoia and gore. I did have to step away from it a few times simply because of some of the more horrifying scenes but my interest in this book never wavered. The writing was vivid, enthralling and funny with ease. I love when characters react honestly to their surroundings and I felt like Prince Jal was about as honest as he could be. Snorri was deep and strong just like a Viking should be. I loved this book. It was a fresh break from over played fantasy storylines. I look forward to the sequel!
review 2: This book feels almost like an
... moreafterthought of The Broken Empire. The pace is slower, most of the time, quite uneventful. The reader is prone to get easily bored. Prince Jalan is the polar opposite is Prince Jorg. While the Ancarth prince was unimaginably badass, this new Red March prince is simply an ass. The storytelling is mildly humorous, though not as gripping. It does not keep one awake the whole night racing to the end, like The Broken Empire did. One has to keep concentrating to stop one's attention from getting diverted repeatedly. All in all, this book tells more about the Broken Empire, but the story is somewhat slow and bland, not quite what is expected of Mark Lawrence. Hopefully, this will change with the sequels... less
