review 1: Wow.And I mean, like, wow. This made me tear a little.Ever since The Broken Empire series Mark Lawrence has been on my Most Awesome Favourite Writers Ever (MAFWE™) list and would read anything he wrote. And I mean anything. I even made my sister read this and she knows what Lawrence writes, oh I've told her, and when she saw his name up there she squirmed. And then she loved it.I've come across reviews before about short stories that changed peoples lives or gave them nightmares. They turned out ok. But this? THIS? This I will probably still be thinking about in years time. Now Lawrence is on my Superhuman Genius Writers with Powers to Rip Your Soul Out list. (SGWPRYSO, rights are on their way)On a more serious note, thank you Mark, for writing this brilliant tale. It wil... morel stay with me (and my sister) for a long time.
review 2: This story made me cry. In a good way, as they say. I was pulled in by well crafted descriptions of poverty and loss, then carried away on a stream of hope and sorrow. It is not the usual Mark Lawrence offering, so do not decide whether to read it based on your emotional response to Jorg Ancarth. If you are looking for Jorg, you may be disappointed. If you are avoiding Jorg, you may miss a story that will truly move you. less
