review 1: I'm a big fan of Nate Powell. His illustrations often show more than the text can convey. That's the case in this g.n. exploring the events leading up to the sit-in at TSU in Houston in 1968, which resulted in police-initiated violence. Long's overall message "the silence of our friends," taken from King's "Letter from a Birmingham Jail," is a standout theme in exploring social justice issues, and well chosen. The story doesn't always match the strength of the title or the illustrations. But a story certainly worth lingering over. I especially appreciate Powell's grid choices, his panel and gutter layouts and the use of black on white/white on black grids.
review 2: Graphic novel that depicts a true story during the Civil Rights movement. Two families
... morelives become intertwined as a white reporter, Jack Long, covers protests in the Third Ward of Houston, Texas-led by TSU professor, Larry Thompson. While the story tackles serious issues, the graphics help carry the story and fill in the blanks. It's an easy read, intriguing story and sheds light on struggles African Americans faced during the Civil Rights movement. less
