review 1: I read this as the events in Ferguson were occurring. It was interesting to see the parallels. I liked this book quite a lot, but, I felt that it was too short. I also felt that the start was confusing. I didn't quite understand the plot and the characters until well into the book. Still, it's a good read, with fairly typical, decent art. I think the most fascinating aspect of it is that it was written by one of the children actually present during the events.
review 2: The Silence of our Friends is a graphic novel that depicts Houston, Texas of 1968. A married couple are new to the local area, and hearing their children use the N- word wasn't exactly their idea of getting used to the neighborhood. Rampant racism in the people of Houston causes African American
... mores to experience prejudice and discrimination, and whites who try to help are bullied. The scenes depicted in this book are entirely drawn in greyscale which adds to the dramatic tension in the larger 60s Texas culture. At one point, a white character is coerced to misreport the television news by his racist manager and later testifies as a witness to the death of a police officer who was present during an African American civil protest. It is a story of friendship among racially different people and the social judgement that follows one person's acceptance of a minority. This would work well with students who like true stories and histories. less

Worth the read, hard, powerful and thought provoking, as one expects from First Second press.

Slow at first, but picks up midway. Love page 192. Great use of graphic novel genre.
