review 1: This is one of the most satisfying mysteries I've read in a long time. I read it in one day, staying up until midnight to finish it. The character development is a little wanting, but the plot and pacing are well done, and it kept my interest until the end. This is the second novel by this author. I have not read the first (although I plan to), but nevertheless I did not feel lost by reading this second book first. I enjoyed the settings - Paris and the French countryside - and felt the book made good on its promises at the end.

A little E.A.Poe-ish in its villain. Hugo Marston is a little too sanctimonious for my taste.

It was nice to read a new author. Book was interesting--a bit Holmes and Watson but so-so.
