review 1: James and Eamon are best friends who head to Nature Camp for a week and find, despite apparent lack of interesting and exciting things around Eamon's grandparents' house, they have plenty to keep them entertained and to even have the best week ever.This was a pretty fun book, but it didn't quite resonate with me for some reason. There was a lot of humor and fun in the storytelling and illustrations, but the premise made me feel like I was reading about an inside joke or someone telling about an experience that you kind of had to be there to appreciate. It still had plenty of Marla Frazee's by now signature charm and it was still a fun and colorful celebration of childhood friendship and vivid imagination and boyish games.
review 2: It's refreshing to read a p... moreicture book that doesn't seem preachy or moralistic or even educational, but just fun. I loved the characters in this book and the realistic portrayal of what summer vacation is for. I also like how the text offers us one interpretation of events while the illustrations and speech bubbles give us another (perhaps truer) interpretation. Could be paired with This Is Not My Hat for a lesson on interpreting the text, or unreliable narrators. The illustrations are great too, glad it got a Caldecott honor. less
