review 1: I can't speak highly enough about this book. It is stunning. It brings the horrors of late 18th/early 19th century Jamaican slavery vividly to life in a way that is true to historical reality (James is clearly familiar with Thistlewood's diaries). But he populates this setting with some of the most well drawn, three dimensional characters I've ever encountered, both black and white, slave and free.
review 2: I have read this book twice over the past three years, and will soon read it a third time. It is startling, it is violent, but it carves out a space in the reader and fills us with a deeper understanding of humanity. Seeing the main character grow and begin to understand the world around her is an intense ride from start to finish, but by the end of it
... more we see exactly what it is that makes her special. Her sassy nature, and efforts to make sense of her wretched world are at times heartbreaking, but ultimately is what makes this book so beautiful. The Book of Night Women is the most eye opening coming of age story on any bookshelf. less
