review 1: Excellent book. To say I 'enjoyed' it wouldn't be quite right. How can you enjoy a story all about the worst of humanity? It's an important story and one told well. The story is woven together beautifully with very well developed characters that you really get to know over the course of the book. None are without fault yet you get pulled into this story. Hard going, difficult to read in places but it is important that we still read these stories as the aftermath of slavery is still with us now.
review 2: This is a special book in so many ways. The story takes place on a sugar cane plantation in Jamaica in 1800. It is a book about the slaves on the plantation. The story is brutal, and the violence is explicitly depicted. The most explicit depiction of the most
... more violent acts that I've ever read. Cringe-worthy. The story is also clever, well-conceived, sometimes tender and touching, and occasionally darkly humorous. The entire story is told in an Afro-Jamaican patois, the language of the slaves themselves, which is only occasionally hard to understand, but continually enriched my reading experience. less

A good book but so upsetting I would not recommend it to someone else. Not to be read before bed.
