review 1: A not so easy to read but rewarding book about the music and crime in Jamaica during the time of Bob Marley and Peter Tosh - icons of reggae. The early stages of the book are in Jamaica and then toward the end moves to New York as the drug lords look for greener pastures. Much of the novel is told from the perspective of these underworld figures. That is part of the difficulty reading it as the dialogue is peppered with a good helping of terminology and slang that someone not familiar with it will have trouble interpreting. Very gritty and insightful
review 2: Much like the early episodes of The Wire, this book felt like homework to me. My enjoyment paled in comparison to the societal expectation that I should enjoy it, as a well-cultured reader. Too much Jam
... moreaican patois and dialect, and too little character background and exposition until late in the book. And no one, really, is likable. Honestly, the two characters I felt were the best fleshed out were Weeper, a conflicted gay black hitman, and Josey Wales, a calculating black crime business kingpin. Hmm, shades of Omar Little and Stringer Bell? less
