review 1: 22nd in the Richard Jury series, after a 5 year hiatus. Apparently there is now a 23rd published this year. I rather felt the stories are getting a bit long in the tooth. Hadn't read one for 10 or more years and thought I'd try another, but it just wasn't very satisfactory. Richard has begun to wear on me, being the entirely MOST sensitive tortured soul in the world, and his relationships with the women in his life and becoming ever more deeply Freudian. ... morenges of the plot serving no purpose that I can see except a peek into the British upper class and someone to run a few errands for the Detective. Except for the nemesis, who adds an easy plot twist/complication but of course if never the 'one'.In this one, a black cat (actually several) features in the murder. As well as victims who wear fancy shoes, and Jury running back and forth from London to Chesham, which seems to be somewhere North of London. less
