review 1: As I make my way through Edward's Lake District series, albeit in a rather haphazard way as titles become available in the local library, I am finding I like his writing style more and more. Characters are finely realised and their dynamics tethered out into a nice tension. When a writer can relax into a brief but exact commentary for a humane touch I appreciate it: "A quartet of Herdwick sheep surveyed the activity of the emergency services with bemused fatalism" just strikes me as a more sardonic commentary that adds a subtle edge to the usual descriptive scenery. Brings back my own memories of Cumbrian flocks. Some scenes however, especially the first chapter, are rather gruesomely detailed but it's a book and I can skip the more disturbing passages because I'm a wimp a... morend have far too active an imagination. Serpent Pool's plot winds into suitable intricacy and while a tad slow to start, gives a good strong and righteous finale with minimal melodrama. All told a rattling good read. Intend to check out the rest of the this series.
review 2: This fourth in the Lake District series has Hannah taking center stage, with Daniel more in the background. While Daniel prepares, mostly behind the scenes, for a presentation at a De Quincey symposium and deals with the fall-out from Louise's love life, Hannah deals with a cold case connected to some current murders and with her relationship with Marc. This kept me guessing until the end, and as always, Edwards did a terrific job bringing the Lake District to life. I like Hannah and Daniel very much, and I'm anxiously waiting for Edwards to write #5 in the series so that I can spend more time with them! less

This book takes place in The Lake District in the winter, which is mostly all it's got going for it.
