review 1: This was a very cute, fun, little read. It had the right amount of happy, sad, and angry. I wasn't expecting that whole thing with the car. I was worried and hopped things wouldn't end badly. It was short, sweet, and too the point. I especially loved Lyla and Tripp writing the songs and singing together. Their quirky notes to each other where adorable. I'm so glad everything worked out ok for them. I think Lylas Dad gets her better now. And Tripp's Mom must get that things are better for him now. Music really does bring out the best in everyone.
review 2: If you're a music enthusiast and a fan of Young Adult fiction, then this book is for you. It's filled with actual guitar notes and musical talent tied together through heartbreak and a developing friendship.Ma
... morery Amato's "Guitar Notes" is about two teenagers sharing a practice room a few times a week during school. Tripp is a rebellious boy, and the only thing he cherishes in the world is his guitar. Lyla is a musically-talented prodigy, a cello enthusiast, and a frequent player for big shows. Tripp and Lyla start out with a difficult rapport, but by writing notes to each other in the practice room, they both share a bond for music and each other's depressing history. What's unique about the book is that it actually has notes in the back of it with original songs from the book. the main characters write songs together and they can actually be listened to or even played on a guitar. I chose to read the book because I love music and I love guitars. I don't even know how to play one, but I love seeing musicians play them. I'm really fascinated by guitarists. I actually have piano-training in real life.Normally, I don't read lots of Young Adult fiction, but I saw this one and knew it was about music just based on looking at the cover. It's a really good read if you love music and want to try writing a song. It can be inspiring in some ways. less

Excellent story, I especially enjoyed the music elements, how two stressed-out kids connect through music. There was a bit of a deus-ex-machina resolution at the end, but it fit. I really enjoyed this book. It even has song charts at the end for the songs Tripp and Lyla write together. However, I hope there are recordings of the songs somewhere, because chord progressions don't show the melody. You need a lead sheet for that, or to hear it... Lead sheets can have the chords too, but since they're written on a staff, they take more room & effort to print.
