review 1: Daisy Chain tells the story of a 14 year old boy's struggles after his best friend, 13 year-old, Daisy disappears. Her last request of him had been for him to walk her home and he had refused to do so because he was late getting home already and feared his father's punishment. He blames himself for her disappearance right after he left her at the ruins of a church. His struggles with her disappearance are portrayed against the problems he faces in his own home with an abusive father who is also a pastor and a mother who has turned to sleeping and headaches to escape her husband's abuse. Jed is very close to his younger sister and sees himself in the role of protector for both her and his mother but is often unable to do which causes him to feel like even more of a fail... moreure. The author has done an awesome job of portraying Jed's inner turmoil and spiritual struggles in the midst of all these difficult situations. The intensity with which she portrays Jed really drew me in to the point where I had to put the book down at times because I couldn't bear the fear and abuse he lived with on a daily basis with his father. His spiritual struggles are ones that most people would be able to identify with. This book is definitely not one with all the answers or even a happy ending. The only thing I did not like about the book was that the ending really left me hanging. I was not expecting that and was disappointed in it. Because of that, I only rated it 3 stars instead of 4.
review 2: I downloaded this as a Kindle Freebie awhile ago and just recently read it. It had the feel of a 'To Kill a Mockingbird' set in the 70's in Definace, TX. A young girl goes missing and her best friend, a boy called Jed Pepper, is the last one to see her alive. His anguish is that he didn't walk her home and now she has gone missing. This is a coming of age novel with Christian values that is also suspensful as they search for the missing Daisy. less
