review 1: I've read other books in the Lost Lords series and I wish I started with this one first. Lots of dramatic coincidences in this book and some trite explanations at the end but still it was an enjoyable read. I could have done without some of the soap opera flourishes, but realize that Putney is trying to set up the framework for the Lost Lords series here and that's why there was the introduction of so many surprise family members.
review 2: My god this book was bad but I still couldn't quite put it down. Books like this are the reason I walked away from historical romance a few years ago. It's just full of all of these ridiculous coincidences and the characters do and say the dumbest things. My apologies in advance but it's hard to rant without giving away s
... moreome plot points. So Mariah finds Adam mostly but not quite dead and ends up telling him they're married. I can get past that idiocy that's bound to bite her in the butt. They of course get far too intimate both emotionally and physically before she tearfully confesses. And he just takes it in stride!!! His friends arrive astonished he's alive and he decides to call her his fiancee and take her off to London. Huh? And then both Adam and Mariah find their families lied and essentially abandoned them in different and equally jaw dropping ways and rather than have normal reactions like rage, anger, resentment, horror, disappointment they both essentially just laugh and give hugs all around. What??? And of course in the end they really are perfect for each other and end up happily ever after. Sigh. What a bunch of drivel! There's no substance here. No depth. No real emotion or emotional reactions. It's just a bunch of contrived drama to end up with the grand embrace at the end. So why in all hells did I just start the second book???? This is why these books are so dangerous. They're crap but addictive crap! less
