review 1: Mary Oliver celebrates the untethered dogs that like a wagging tail lives an always-moving arch between wildness and tameness. She recollects dogs from her past, the absurdity of such short lifespans, wonder/wildness/lust that dogs naturally feel toward life, and the possible thoughts (and even possible sentences) of the thinking, feeling, swooning, begging, wandering beasts. The dog who idolizes in wonder at his owner as the owner idolizes in wonder at the moon. The dog that experiences that extra-sensory plane where smell is like music that they follow. Many of us remember that dog or even currently have that furry best friend who wanders off, but like in the end of Whitman's poem "Song of Myself", stops and looks back:"I stop somewhere, waiting for ... moreyou."
review 2: Here, we hear of the adventures of the author’s many doggies, from Percy (named after the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley) to Bear to Ricky and others. One title of a poem is “The Sweetness of Dogs,” and, indeed, Oliver describes the touching, endearing aspects of dogs and their bonds with their humans. As always, Mary Oliver is supremely positive and shows us the life-affirming in our day to day:“Thus we sit, myselfthinking how grateful I am for the moon’sperfect beauty and also, oh! how richit is to love the world!”The book is wonderfully illustrated by John Burgoyne. The book makes us, if it is possible, love our doggies more. less
