review 1: Mary Swan's writing is hypnotizing..you are under her spell until the very last punctuation. Boys In The Trees was engrossing, ethereal and mesmerizing. I could not believe how beautifully she puts her words together and how seamlessly they flow. The story itself is dark and sullen but the writing keeps you wanting to read more. I loved all the characters in this book. Creating characters from the late 19th century along with their thoughts, ideas and ways of life must be no easy task however she does it flawlessly. Another Canadian author that we can add to our already long and talented list...what IS in our WATER!!!!! Whatever it is please leave it there!!
review 2: This a an evocative book with a dreamy tho' often confusing plot line that skips back & forth
... more between different time periods & characters. The story centers around a family that has undergone horrific tragedy & immigrates to Canada in the late 19th Century. There is something disquieting about each character & the writing style makes for equal unease reading the saga. The descriptions are quite compelling & the writing is exquisite tho the story is harrowing. It's a good read if you borrow the book. I wouldn't rush out to purchase a copy. less
