Beside Your Heart
review 1: 4-4.5 stars. Even though the story starts out when Nicki and Adam are out of college, the whole book is about the history of the relationship between Nicki and Adam while they are juniors in high school. Adam's family is living in Texas for the year while his dad is on sabbatical, they are originally from Britain. Nicki had a traumatic summer because she survived a car accident with her mother while her sister did not. Although there's an attraction between Nicki and Adam, they are really only friends at first because Nicki is still grieving and Adam has a girlfriend. As the romance builds to a boyfriend and girlfriend relationship, Nicki really leans on Adam as her confidante. The only real issue with them is the obvious white elephant in the room where Adam will be retur... morening to Britain at the end of the school year. Nicki feels too fragile to even maintain a friendship because her feelings are more than that, but Adam is heartbroken because he can't bear to not have Nicki in his life. I loved how sensitive and artistic Adam was and it was very clear how much he adored Nicki, that she wasn't just any girl to him. Nicki is very intelligent and selfless, and a little broken. They bring out a certain level of emotion in each other that they wouldn't around others. They both have their moments of immaturity and while it's clear that this is a high school romance, it's obvious that this has the potential to be so much more, like the once-in-a-lifetime love not to let go if there wasn't an ocean separating them. I completely understood why Nicki felt that she had to let Adam go entirely and cut off all communication, but I also understood why Adam was absolutely not okay with that. Nicki was being realistic and Adam might have been a little idealistic. Either way, the ending sets up the stage for the next book where they will be meeting again as adults established in their careers.
review 2: A intense story of first love, from that sweet first glow to the inevitable sad heartache of the break up. I especially like the start when she is battling her emotions about whether to look him up on the internet after all their history. I am looking forward to starting book two as we progress to the grown up Nicki and Adam set 16 years later. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. less
