review 1: What I liked: this is the first civil war period novel that is told from the point of view of southerners (without making them sound like northerners), so that was really interesting to me. The historical aspect was totally new to me; I had no idea that SO many of our people emigrated. I appreciated the Christian themes on forgiveness. I loved the way the story ended in uncertainty bathed in hope, rather just after a marriage.What I didn't like:The characters were so confused for most of the book, and so was I. The romance was constant back and forth, hot and cold. I didn't like the love at first sight aspect.I didn't like the way that those who didn't like Eliza were wrong or evil. Unrealistic. And then, those who are wrong, Eliza eventually wins over. Also unrealistic.I... more found Eliza's flawless, perfect personality and demeanor unrelatable much of the time. Even those of us with the best of intentions and the most loving hearts, even those of us who constantly immerse ourselves in God's word and spirit, are still human, still flawed, still hypocritical from time to time. Eliza never was.
review 2: I didn't thought I would like it. But I actually did. It was actually a mistake buy, but it is okay. It has a nice love story, but at the same time pretty annoying!It has a lot of "God" in it, which is wear to read for me as an atheist. But it worked for the book. It was confusing at times because it had a thing about jumping in time, and there is a small symbol which marks that they chance the point of view, which was annoying when you didn't know about it. But all in all it was good. I probably wouldn't get the next book because I am afraid of what would happen to the story.I recommend it just for the love story. less
