Marty Singer
review 1: Marty Singer, a newly retired police detective and newly diagnosed with cancer, is not sure what direction and purpose his "new" life will have until a young woman approaches him to ask for his help. Amanda Lane, he realizes, is the grown up version of the little girl whose mother had been murdered in a case that Singer had worked on years before. This mystery was better than many I have read, and I enjoyed the author's often witty and sarcastic style of writing. A quick read -- great for an airplane, on the beach, or a dreary afternoon.
review 2: A retired cop, bored with retirement already gets re involved with an old case that he feels he failed. The daughter of the victim who goes to the detective, Marty Singer, telling him that she is being stalked by t
... morehe killer of he mother, a killer found innocent by the jury.A psycho obsessed killer, once a cop.A corrupt police chief. All very familiar elements. It obviously would take something extra to make this book stand out from all similar novels. The author added the needed extra ingredient to make a difference: the ex-cop hero, Marty Singer, has Ben diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing chemo. He takes the case on almost as a reason to live, as much as wanting to see justice done. There are extra elements that help move the action along, including a love affair, and a plot that has some twists, including a nice one at the end.All in all I found the book OK . It did not really stand out in the crowd of mass of detective novels. In fact I found my interest lagging a bit toward the end, just when interest should be revving up. I felt that I had read it all before. I was a bit doubtful that anyone un going chemo, which the story describes as terribly draining Singer, would have allowed him to perform anywhere near as physically as he does in the story. I could be wrong, of course, but chemo patients I have known never looked as if they could run, jump and fight. This is the first book in a series. If you like cop mysteries that are straightforward, nicely plotted and easy to read, it will fit your bill. less
