review 1: I picked it up mainly because the description said there was an enchanted green violin in the story, and I'm into violins.Overall, I enjoyed the story. It is well-paced with likable characters, and an ending that ties things up pretty well.I would recommend it to others who enjoy children's fantasy, but I won't rave about it. There were many times that I was pulled out of the story because of things being just a bit too convenient or childishly simple. I still wanted to know what happened next though, so I can't complain too much. It's a nice read.
review 2: Why does it take me so long to read a book that others say is a "quick read"? Well for one it's OVER 300 pages! For 2, it's such a quaint and interesting story that I just enjoy little smackerels until I
... morereally just need to finish the darn thing and get on with my life. I loved this story with its fascinating characters and dilemmas. Late 19th century American history is so eclectic and strange as the Industrial revolution messes with people's scruples and greed for more for less. We still have those same problems today but instead of children being enslaved and overworked, it's grown men and women underpaid for the beauty of the bottom line. Kirby is fantastic at interweaving magic, fairy tale and historical setting. He makes you wonder and I love to wonder. The psychological themes of loss, grief and gratitude and honesty in friendship are a powerful undercurrent that moves the story along and the characters together. less
