review 1: Very good. Deals with a group / colony of sea steaders in the near-ish future and the invention of a very good augmented reality system (and the way the company markets it and all that). Ideas such as, with this perfect augmented reality you can exist in real life or virtual life in any proportion or combination you like, and all the ridiculous stuff you want to do in VR has nearly 0 resource requirements. So everyone can live a super first world life on a shoestring budget. The thing that interested me was the way the VR was described. It so seamlessly interfaces with your senses that you can do things like go on a nice hike through the woods when you're really on a walk home in a cold dark city with trash on the ground and traffic noise. If something gets in your way, it... more basically auto pilots your body over it. Your body can exercise while you relax on a beach. Or sexier things.Of course it goes into interesting problems too, like a wants to be mom growing extremely attached to her virtual family so much that she disconnects from her real husband.Good book.
review 2: I am sorry, I really did try to like it. I've read a lot of SciFi in the last 20 years and I love books with a complex world set-up. I am also a PhD and work as a technology analyst. But, by God, this book is SO COMPLEX that it just isn't enjoyable. You have to decipher the terms and relationships and descriptions and try to be make sense of everything all the time. Maybe I've become stupider over the course of my life, but after reading about 60% of the text, I have to quit. Wow, what a mess! So, yes, it has lots of good ideas and a fun worldview, but its sheer complexity makes it hard to enjoy. I did try, but it just didn't work. less
