review 1: Even as an audiobook, I found it really hard to get into this, and stay in it. Some characters are more fun than others, but you never stay with any of them long enough to get any real connection. Also most of them seem a tad whimsical. I found myself rooting against most of the characters and after several weeks have stopped the book halfway through, which for me is something i rarely do.I spent the money on it, so I felt I owed to myself to finish it, but the strangely times switching of scenes, and the characters which are simply all over the place make it hard to keep track of what is going on.Maybe im too simple for this kind of fantasy Mcflurry, but I feel the author was trying to do too much all at once, and has lost flow and storytelling quality in exchange for ela... moreborate world building.
review 2: This book really took a turn for the better about halfway through. The first 200 pages were boring, full of characters I didn't care about, and without much to recommend. The writing seemed a bit stilted and awkward, as well. The last 100 pages turned things around, however, and I found myself caring about what happened and wondering how things would be resolved. This is the first in a trilogy but it stands well on its own merits. It's not among the best fantasy works I've read recently but it does an acceptable job and is a decent novel by a first-time author. less

Never again, it was a fascinating read but I will never put myself through so much pain again.
