review 1: This book reads quickly and is entertaining, though the novel seemed to retell Snow White in a way that has already been done. That is, it seemed like a variation of Neil Gaiman's much earlier Snow White retelling "Snow, Glass, Apples," in which Snow White is also an undead murderer. I also sensed hints of Angela Carter's "The Company of Wolves." While I enjoyed the two aforementioned stories more (and I understand that they were written for a different audience--adults, not YA), I still enjoyed this fleshed-out update to Snow White (and Red Riding Hood in a way?), and appreciated a strong heroine. I do wonder why the novel is titled "The Glass Casket" when the story is hardly about the casket, which shows up once in the middle of the novel and that's it. Because it sounds... more nice?
review 2: I was disappointed with this one - I thought it had a lot of promise from the blurb and the writing has some lovely bits, but ultimately it just fell flat. The characters felt distant and were predictable; there was too much detail on unimportant things and not enough on actual important plot points; the romance was unsurprising and kinda boring; and the surprise at the end wasn't much of one. But again, some of the writing was quite good and the premise was intriguing. I think there is an audience for this, but it's not me. less
