review 1: I loved this book! I read it originally when it first came out and was anxious to read the rest of the trilogy. Sadly, it got shoved to the back of my to-read list and I only recently was able to acquire the other two books. So I decided, it having been years since I read it, to re-read this one. I, again, discovered how much I enjoyed this book. The world building is superb, leaving me feeling as if I was right there with Lark during her journey. Her discovery of the rest of the world beyond her city was amazing. And her character was spot on. Of course if someone has never been outside a protected, secure place before they will not be confident in their ability to survive and will cling to someone who appears to be a protector. I liked that Lark seemed weak and unsure of... more herself. A more dominant character type would not have fit the story and I would have been disappointed. Lark's inability to decipher other people's actions was spot on too! According to her history, she was shunned, not really part of any family or friend unit because of her older sibling as well as the fact that she was 16 and had never been harvested. If she had been able to easily determine everyone else's character, then it would have struck me as unrealistic. Instead, Lark was extremely real to me and I loved following her through a magically twisted wasteland to find where she belonged. With my mind refreshed, I am jumping right into book 2, Shadowlark!
review 2: I loved this book so much!!! I didn't expect to enjoy it that much, and at the beginning it didn't seem like it would be that great. It proved me wrong, though! There was action and some of those scenes that creep you out, making you want to look behind you. And the end of the book was aammaazzzing! There were plot twists that I never saw coming and which put me in denial for a while. This book is one of my favorites now and I can't wait to read the sequel! less

Some things just didn't make sense and it was quite obvious and blatant but its a great plot.
