review 1: I love Melissa Lemon's fairy-tale re-tellings. I love that you know any time you pick up one of her books that you are going to get a great, clean story that you won't want to put down. This book is all of that and more! I loved the way that she's woven two fairy-tales together, Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast. The way she does this is really clever. The book is about two brothers, both princes and two women. One is sleeping forever, or until someone figures out how to wake her and the other is a young woman treated so badly that she's turned into a beast that no one can stand to be around, and she's been charged with murder. It's interesting how the sleeping princess, Eglantine, meets Prince Henry as she's traveling through her dream world. He's the only one who'... mores ever been able to see her in any of her dreams. This was really fun and really original. I loved how Eglantine would try to make him look bad to the others in the room, just because she could, so funny! I also really liked how Prince Duncan tried everything that he could to make the beastly woman happy, such a sweetheart. The ending of this book was fairy-tale perfect. You won't want to miss it!
review 2: I would call this a rather twisted mash-up of fairy tales. It is certainly an entertaining concept. It took me quite awhile to get into it, but once I did I started to enjoy the book. I can't put my finger on just what kept me from digging in immediately. I want to say the style of writing felt somewhat stiff, but I am not sure that is quite right. Something simply didn't flow that would entice me into that "just one more chapter" mentality. The twist on the two separate stories was enjoyable and interesting. I loved our couple representing Sleepy Beauty. I wish there had been more from Ovinia's perspective. As we found out, she truly wasn't a beast in that she had all of her mental facilities. I imagine her thoughts would have been heart wrenching and just what we needed to balance the two stories. Without hearing her thoughts/feelings, I found myself much less concerned with the Beast story. That is disappointing as it really was a good story! The emotional aspect was lost for me tho.. less
