review 1: I received this book from Goodreads giveaways. This is my first attempt at a *real* review so bear with me. ;) It was very easy to read and well written. I got through the entire book in a matter of days, which says a lot since I am a busy mom. With that being said, maybe it's the types of books that I typically read but I feel like there wasn't much of a plot to this book. I looked on here (goodreads) and Amazon for plot summaries and all I got was what it says on the back cover of the book ("they said high school would be fun. They said we would make forever friends. They said we would have the time of our lives. They lied.") which is a good teaser but doesn't really describe what it's about. Then I read the book and I feel like I can't really describe what the book is a... morebout except to say it's about the lives of fairly typical, albeit dysfunctional, teenagers. The book is written from the perspectives of different characters, which is really cool and very different from most other novels. The author did a fantastic job giving voice to all of her characters. But, it seems like the book started off and spends the majority of the time about Javier and the mystery surrounding what happened between him and Nathan. Then as soon as we find out what happens, it's suddenly about Selah and her familial issues. I'm a little disappointed with the ending. It seems like right as we got to the good stuff of why everyone is the way they are, the book just ended. It's a little frustrating but I will definitely read the second book in this series so I can find out what happens next. I'm hoping for a little more excitement. I feel like i should read this book again now that I know what to expect, especially before I read the second (once I have the chance to get it). And hopefully there will be more about Izzy and Gio or possibly spin off books about them!
review 2: Almost 4 stars, I think. This took me a long time to get into and then I couldn't put it down. The beginning is so muddy that it's hard to even figure out what the point is and how all the pieces go together. Once you figure it out, it's such a troubling look at what so many kids have to navigate and how ignorant some "adults" are. Frankly, I wanted to wring the neck of the school secretary. I'm curious enough to see where things go in book 2. I hope it's not as convoluted as this one. less
