review 1: Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy. This is the most unusual, twisted, dark, haunting piece of magical realism I've ever read. Or fictional symbolism as I read somewhere? I have no idea how to rate the book, it's so different from anything I've read and like reading, I have to chew on it for a while longer. It's definitely not my cup of tea, but Rodoreda's prose is truly beautiful, even in (English) translation.
review 2: Gosh that was weird. People getting buried in trees, their bodies filled with cement to prevent the soul from escaping, pregnant women made to wear blindfolds, a prisoner neighing like a horse. Supposedly a metaphor for Franco's Spain, can't say i know enough about that, it could also be read as a metaphor for puberty, all that death and wisteria. Seems l
... moreike Rodoreda had some kind of deep rooted connection to the psychological and symbolic nature of fear and cruelty, as i guess most folk tales seem to. It is a beautiful and terrible place, sometimes impenetrable, maybe at times it revels in its own stink a bit, but how wonderful of Open Letter to make it available to us little non-Catalan speaking readers. Dark, but a little too far-flung for me. Not a tight enough plot. Too meandering and distracted.
