review 1: Better than some Valdemar, worse than others. 2.5 stars really. Though at one point I kind of wanted to pull a Wade the Duck and run through the book screaming "Help, stupid plot twist, help!" I reassured myself that no, clearly the random utterly out of characterness of the protagonists best friends 2/3 through must be from some diabolical manipulation. But no. They're just stupid teenagers, apparently.
review 2: I liked it, but I'm not sure I really liked it. Maybe a rating of 3 1/2 stars would be more accurate. I can't help but compare it to the others in the Valdemar series and it's not my favorite (like Arrows of the Queen, or the ones with Elspeth) but I liked it better than the Gryphon and Owl books so... worth reading, better than many books I've re... moread, but not the best.The main character was a little... overdone. And the way he talked was off putting (like Stephen King's Dolores Claiborne) but I will reread the first book and now that I know there are others in this particular series, I'll read them too. Maybe that's a good recommendation? That the book made me want to reread the first I read ages ago and then the books that come after? less
