review 1: 4.5 stars. This book was amazing! The characters were exciting and well developed. The romance aspect was very fun and the story was riveting. I have no idea how Ms. Duran has successfully written a fully developed world and story all in one book, but she did and I loved every page. This book was full of action, adventure, love and humor.Update: I have since read a few of Ms. Duran's books and have enjoyed each one of them, but The Duke of Shadows is still by far my favorite! This is just a really good book.
review 2: I read a fair share of historical fiction and a lot of it involved titles or political positions. I grew tired of the same old, happy ending which one can deduce based on the first time the hero and heroine met. But this one is different; it ta
... moreckled issues of politics, war, loyalty and the betrayal. It had a complex mix of issues that I loved because Julian and Emmaline’s love didn’t just happen because they lusted for each other, rather the torn situation and destiny brought them together and apart. It was an up and down moment reading this book, I’d be giggly and then down casted in the next. I feel like a gushing school girl because their love made it through the difficulty after years passed. Emmaline is such a lovable character. She wasn't vain like in most books wherein authors would describe their characters as beautiful and flawless like no other in this face of the planet. She has insecurities on how she looked like a real woman would feel. It was by her actions I imagined her to be pretty. She may be a conventional, virgin character in romance novels but she amounts to so much more. She is strong yet vulnerable. She is talented but shies away from the garnered attention. Her characteristics are admirable. As for Julian, he was the typical ‘get laid’ kind of guy. But his words of love when he whispers on her ear, oh my, I feel the tingles. The poetry he speaks when they made love really got me blushing pink.So when love is combined in war raging place that is exotic, India. You get this story, a sizzling and sophisticated tale of love’s destiny. less
