review 1: From other reviews it seems like this is the debut novel of this author, and it is a pretty decent first piece of work. The author has a good sense of writing style which was able to capture my attention from the first chapter, however, there were parts in the story where I felt that the main storyline was lost in the million subplots that were introduced. I had borrowed this book from the library after reading the summary on the back, which had a feel of a romance which didn't go quite right the first time and was now getting a second chance - a fantastic idea and I was hooked to the main storyline of Rachel and Ben (with her boyfriend and his wife as part of this central circle of characters). However, I felt that too much of the plot was drawn out on the gatherings of R... moreachel and her group of friends, and to be honest I skipped over some of the "dinner party" chapters because they were becoming too draggy without adding to the main storyline. I was, however, hooked till the end as I really wanted to see how things eventually worked out for Rachel and Ben. Whilst I am happy with the way things ended (generally), I tend to agree with other reviews on this page - an epilogue would have been nice to really tie things together!
review 2: "Sparkling debut" is the perfect description for this wonderfully-told tale of two former best friends who, after finally getting together in college, had a massive miscommunication that resulted in ten years of estrangement. Rachel bumps into her former flame, Ben, and she's immediately catapulted into a web of sticky feelings: He's married - happily so, from all appearances - and she's recently unengaged from her very longtime fiance. She tries so hard to do the right thing in ignoring her feelings, and moving on with her life...but from the moment these two meet on the page, it's clear that they're meant to be together. This novel is filled with quick, snappy dialogue (it's British English, so Americans take note of the British-isms; they may be hard-to-follow if you're unfamiliar with English culture or contemporary British women's fiction). When Rachel's with her friends, the words fly out of their mouths in such a way that I felt as if I was sitting in the room with them. When Rachel's with Ben (especially in the beginning), I could feel the start-and-stop of her inner dialogue. The ending of this novel really surprised me. Ben's married, and Rachel finally sees that she needs to move on with her life, but the final twist made my heart soar and gave me the elated feeling I'd so hoped to experience. This brilliant read led me to purchase her follow-up novel, Here's Looking at You. If it's even half as humorous, poignant, and heart-warming as this one, I'll be thrilled.Five stars.*Disclaimer: I was provided an e-copy for an honest review.* less

The blurb for this book caught my eye because...who doesn't want to know what happens when "the one that got away" reappears? My expectations were dashed though and I struggled to finish this one page by page. I was very bored and seemed to take months to read! The saving grace was that the chapters were short for the most part so I would push myself to finish one more until FINALLY I reached the end. I don't recommend this one as I've read far more interesting tales on this subject. If you like stories with a lot of British subject matter and conversational banter then you may find this one charming just not my cup of tea darling :)

Quick read, when you're between more serious books. Nothing worth remembering except a few quotes.
