review 1: Sometimes when I read a book I'm just plain jealous. Mahri McFarlane is one such author. She is just so damn funny. Literal laugh out loud, wake up your husband funny. Doesn't happen often, but when it does it's a real treat. If you want loads of sex in your books then this is not for you (I like those too obviously), but if you like relatable characters who can have you laughing one moment and tearing up the next, people who are so real it's almost as if Mahri has been sitting in the corner of the restaurant I go to with my friends, then this book is a real delight. I read it for book club - I'm so so glad I did. Thank you
review 2: This is the story about two people who overcome their pride and their prejudice, find themselves in the process, and fall
... more in love. While there are certain parallels with Austen's classic, there is also the lovely "Ephron-esque" critiquing of social dating scenes as well. James Fraser was part of the "cool" clique in high school and in his need to impress his friends set the plump Aureliana up for some merciless bullying. Years later, she loses weight, changes her name to Anna, finds her dream job, and is ready to put her past behind her.Their paths cross and they are suddenly forced to work together on a project for work. James doesn't even recognise Anna, but sparks fly and the two can't seem to stay away from each other. This is my second book by this author and I have not been disappointed. She is particularly good at writing friendship between two people in love and the dialogue flows easily off the page. You want to spend more time with the characters and I wish the book had been twice as long (even though it was a slow start). There are many cultural references which are currently very funny, but may not age well, and there are a lot of useless words thrown in but I can't say that they made the book any less enjoyable. (In fact, I now know that 'norc' is another word for breasts)I recommend this book to anyone who loves a feel good enemies to friends to lovers story, anyone who has ever been bullied, anyone who likes Pride & Prejudice type stories (with a twist) and anyone who has too many mirrors in their house... less
