review 1: This is a beautiful book. A Newfoundland island, Sweetland is being abandoned by long-time residents who are being paid to leave. There is one holdout, Moses Sweet. The first half of the book gives us a picture of life on the island and Sweet's attachment to it and it's residents. The second half answers questions about Sweet's past and why he can't or won't leave. This is a novel to inhabit. The author's descriptions put the reader there with Sweet, in that place and time. What a wonderful story!
review 2: I loved this book. My record on Newfoundland writing holds - I have never read a book by a Newfoundland writer that I didn't like, and usually like a lot. This is one of the best. I had not heard of Michael Crummey until one of my favourite Newfoundlanders,
... moreAnnette Clarke, sent it to me. Now I've got to find everything else he has written. It's harsh, it's funny, it's frightening - the cold and the damp went through me as I read it. I also know that I had to go back there as soon as possible. I must have been from that wacky place in another life. Sweetland - I want your life - but if I had a chance to plan for it, I'd bring more food and plenty of paper and pens. less

It's hard to think Michael Crummey could outdo himself, but this book is extraordinary. A must-read.
