review 1: Harvey's series is easy to read and goes down fast. This third in the series follows Kelly as he is one of a few targets connected to an incident that happened in his youth. There's some more added to the back story of Kelly and his upbringing, Feds get involved, good people die (oh how I hate the ones that Harvey picks to die - since the first book in the series he kills off great potential characters) and so do, thankfully, some bad people. Harvey creates a mini future for the victim's of the serial killer and for some reason, those speculations created strong emotional reactions for the vicitms who were only there to be victims. These are only short paragraphs but the concept really grabbed me. This story could have been so much more convoluted but Harvey kept it si... moremple and connected the dots so there was resolution . . . sort of. Also makes you think about how bad sh*t happens to unsuspecting people because of other people's greed, craziness, or perceived wrongs in life.
review 2: Michael Harvey has really hit his stride in his third novel, The Third Rail. The dialogue is natural and realistic; the prose flows much better; and the plot is good. I won’t say it’s predictable, but I guessed part of the ending. Unlike his previous novels, Harvey uses both third-person point of view and first-person from private investigator Michael Kelly’s point-of-view so readers are able to follow other characters and get into their heads. Kelly’s professional relationship with Chicago PD detective Vince Rodriguez has blossomed into an “unofficial” partnership, and Kelly has become, if unwittingly, one of fictional Mayor John J. Wilson’s key players. Wilson may remind readers of Da Boss. The Third Rail is based on the Loop tragedy in the late 70s when some CTA cars became derailed above Lake and Wabash. less

Another great plot, this time involving a 30 year old accident and someone out for revenge.

An OK crime thriller. The plot seemed a little too unbelievable to me.
