review 1: I had recently read all the Michael Kelly private eye books up to this one and I thought they were all excellent mysteries in the gumshoe tradition of the 1940s and '50s. However, I really struggled with "We All Fall Down" and author Michael Harvey seemed to be off his game with this story. The 'noir' feeling of the previous installments was what captured my interest in the first place and this book was more like a 'thriller', which didn't thrill me whatsoever. There just seemed to be too much going on and our hero, private investigator Michael Kelly, was stretched too thin. It's bad enough that a deadly airborne pathogen has apparently been unleashed upon the unsuspecting populous of Chicago, but now he has all these other murders to solve. That said, I will continue... more with the series because Michael Harvey is a very good writer and his private eye protagonist is still a worthwhile character to follow.
review 2: This story covers a bio weapons release and a parallel story about local gangs and how they cross paths. I didn't really enjoy the gang related drama but it did come about that it was a pertinent part of the story. I do think the story could've been just fine without it...exposing greed and cover ups and the bad sides of people. Amazing how a hundred or more deaths can be rationalized by a really, really bad person(s). I do like Harvey's writing, it's quick and it moves and you get the picture and clearly this story was well thought out. Definitely recommend this series. less
