Kerney Family Trilogy
review 1: While I have not lived there since the late 1960's I have always felt at home in New Mexico. I have enjoyed McGarrity's "Kevin Kerney" mysteries. In this book he takes his hand at historical fiction using the Kerney family as the axis to flesh out not only Kevin Kerney's background but the state of New Mexico (this part 1 of a planned trilogy covers post civil war to 1918). The story is a fine one but I appreciate even more the isolated beauty of New Mexico that comes to life through his words - without which this would have been just another cowboy story.
review 2: What a saga! I wanted to be immersed in the world of cowboys and this book took me there with the very first page. The details, the history and the depth of character development is outstanding. Wel
... morel researched. I was so involved with the characters I cried like a baby when one of them died. I won't spoil it and say which one. I had to keep telling myself as I cried,"He's only a character in a book." That thought didn't stop the tears as I remembered all of the things this character had done and been to others over his years of life in the book. The title Hard Country aptly describes the life lived out west from 1878 to 1918. All I can say is I'm grateful for the modern conveniences that I have today. less
