review 1: Maggie--who has rechristened herself Ford Falcon after the car she sleeps in--survives with her family in a dystopian future brought about by climate change. Fortunately her family has found land to live off of, including a dump to scavenge, and neighbors and friends to provide a sense of community. However, after a night at her neighbors' she returns home to find her family missing and her home destroyed. A dystopian/post-apocalyptic for middle grade, this is a fascinating read. I really enjoyed learning about Maggie and how her family lives day-to-day. What they farm, what they scavenge, how they trade, and how they help their friends and neighbors who all have their specialties. Also, there's the whole bubble cities and URCorn and who do you trust part, not to men... moretion the the solar bears and the Gray Devils who used to be normal people but have turned into something less than human. Add in the mysterious secrets to unravel and I was hooked. I liked Maggie and she was a great narrator. She had her moments of self-doubt but she was an overall strong character who understood herself and the difficult choices she had to make. I really liked the relationship she had with her mother and how they would read poetry together to bond and relax. While I'm not totally sold on the ending, it was a satisfying conclusion. I wouldn't mind revisiting Maggie's world, it was a well-planned and thought out world with reasons behind the state of the country.Recommended, especially for those looking for a dystopian book, grades 5 and up.
review 2: Scavengers by Michael Perry is a very intriguing book. I was so into it that I read it in three sittings even though this is not my type of book. I had a difficult time putting it down as I had to find out what was going to happen to Maggie, her family and friends and. The people in control. I am left wondering what is going on in the Bubble cities and more about the Greydevils and the lives of the people who live inside the Bubble cities. I really hope the Author has another book planned or in the works continuing this story. I want to know moreover what I am left wondering about. This is a Good Read! less

Enjoyed- except for the cross talk by Toad. Was never fully aware what age Ford might be.
