review 1: The titular claim of Gazzaniga's "Human" is that it will provide you with the "science behind what makes your brain unique". A bold claim--scientists have been attempting to identify the precise factors that make cognitive function in humans so special. Unfortunately, the subject matter is not something easily resolved, certainly not by another of Gazzaniga's popular science entries. A more realized understanding of the uniqueness of the human mind is going to require more arduous research. Although Gazzaniga is unable to resolve the more transcendental aspects of human cognition, he does provide a fairly sturdy introduction to neural function, mostly within the context of how you are different from your closest primate relatives. The problem is, I am willing to bet that y... moreou are already well aware of the nuances that separate the circles you travel in from the social groups and dynamics present in chimpanzees. Some of the introductory biology and neuroscience is helpful for the uninitiated, but the framework of proving that your brain is 'special' via superficial comparison is somewhat contrived.
review 2: A pretty interesting review of recent neuroscience research. But his thesis, that humans brains are different from other brains, is not exactly controversial. Also, for a book about the uniqueness of the human mind, it was surprisingly unaware of the importance of the man/animal distinction in a number of bioethics debates. It's a popular press book about the brain, and maybe I've read too many of these to fully appreciate it. Gazzaniga recently gave the Gifford lectures and covered a lot of the same material, and I actually found those a little more entertaining.Overall, I'm incredibly impressed with his work and share his conviction that consciousness and intelligence can be explained by the physical properties of neural networks. less
