Detective Kubu
review 1: Kubu is called into the Kalahari to solve several murders. Three Bushmen have been arrested for the killing of a ranger, Monzo, and Kubu's friend Khumanego calls for his help freeing the Bushmen. Then, two student botanists are found in the area dead from poisoned food and another man, Krige is killed in Kalahari in similar fashion to Monzo. Krigi's body was found by Haake and it turns out that Krige is a private detective following Haake. However, Haake is soon killed with a poison arrow. Kubu must go back to the park to hunt the killer and is grave danger for trusting the wrong person.
review 2: The third offering in the Detective Kubu mystery series has an air of unsettlement throughout -- partly due to the murders Kubu is investigating, partly because
... moreof changes that Kubu is experiencing at home. An old friend from school, Khumanego, implores Kubu to get involved in the case, accusing the local police of being racists unjustly targeting the Bushmen who found the first body. Additional murders arise and clues continue to point to involvement by the Bushmen; however, Kubu cannot believe that these peaceful men could be capable of such heinous acts. Kubu must travel away from home to investigate, straining his relationship with Joy. Adding to the stress is the fact that Kubu's boss Mabaku was dead set against getting involved in the case but a reporter's article forces his hand and he agrees to Kubu's request to get involved. A trip to the Kalahari ultimately reveals the truth and the killer's identity...but is it too late for the detective? As was the case in the first two books in the series, the authors have woven in real elements about life in Africa (this one deals with the Bushmen, life in the Kalahari desert, and takes a side trek into neighboring Namibia) and I feel like I learn a little (I'm even remembering the meanings for some of the foreign words without having to flip to the glossary in the back now! :)) while being challenged by the mystery. I look forward to reading the fourth book in the series soon! less
