The Unwritten
review 1: Unwritten enters dangerous territory after the fall of its big bad and the main narrative drive that the last few volumes so satisfying. Tom(my) himself isn't much of a player in this volume so we're left with new leads to keep things moving. Didge is a great addition to the cast and brings some much needed diverity and Filby is a fun temporary foil. Definitely enjoying this more than Fables post-Empire arcs, but the series has lost a little of its magic as the series' great mysteries are laid bare like a beached whale.
review 2: A jump forward after the climatic events of the last book. A temporary (kickass) new narrator relegating our heroes to background characters. Continuation of the Pauly Bruckner side story that pops up every so often, and some revelatio
... morens about how he got where he is. Some great development of Richie's character. A unicorn and a familiar ghost. There is a lot going on in these books, both in terms of plot and especially in terms of concepts. Carey has a fine line to tread, particularly given the restrictions of the form, not to fall into endless exposition whilst also avoiding the reader getting lost and left behind. He succeeds fabulously, whilst also continuously experimenting with structure and story-telling devices. It's difficult to say before they are finished whether these books are truly great, but that old cliche of "best Vertigo title since Sandman" might just work for me here. I'm certainly thinking of going out and buying the lot once they're done. less
