Atiq Rahimi : The Patience Stone

I came across Atiq Rahimi’s ” The Patience Stone” 3 years ago in sixth form whilst searching for inspiration for one of my A Level Graphic Design projects . The trailer really reminded me of Khaled Husseini’s ” A Thousand Splendid Suns” and I began my journey of searching for the book before I watched the film.

The 2008 book is set in a war torn country and is written from an omnipresent or third person perspective. It explores the life of a woman in this war torn country , presumably Afghanistan, following her woes and struggles as she takes care of her husband.

The brutally raw monologue like, writing and description makes it almost impossible to put the book down.  The woman alleviates her suffering by confessing to her comatose husband all her dreams, desires, and secrets.

The film was beautifully made. The ridiculously talented Golshifteh Farahani  played the lead, and as one of my fvourite actresses, i was blown away by her performance. The film was a little slow paced in the earlier sections but as each secret is revealed the pace picks up. I really admired the cinematography and the use of vivid colours in many of the scenes. Beautiful hues of yellow, purple, green and red stood out again the often subdued backdrop of grey.

If your interested in watching a film that shows the other reality of war, from a woman’s perspective, then i would invite you to watch this (and read the book too! )
